The director of Arlington libraries has issued a challenge to neighboring communities, and three others are ready for a friendly fight.Ryan Livergood is betting that Arlington can get a higher-percentage increase in new library-card registrations at Robbins and Fox in February, as compared with the same month last year, than the others can. Vying with Arlington are library systems in Belmont, Somerville and Lexington.

If Livergood loses, he vows to visit a story time at the overall winning library dressed as Clifford the Big Red Dog.
