Remaining Spots for Scholars in Somerville CDF Freedom School Program This Summer
Scholars completing kindergarten through eighth grade will learn to make a difference through reading this summer at no charge to parents.
Somerville, MA (June 13, 2012) – This summer 30 Somerville scholars (K – 8) will participate in a six week Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School at no charge to parents. This exciting summer program will focus on high quality academic enrichment (with a nationally recognized integrated reading curriculum), parent and family involvement (with weekly informational meetings), social action and civic engagement (with action on voter registration), intergenerational servant leadership development (with our successful college student teachers and mentors), and nutrition, health, and mental health (with nutritious meals and fun).
Each day begins at 8:00 AM with a nutritious breakfast, followed by Harambee! (“All pull together” in Swahili), an exciting time of celebrating accomplishments with song, chant, dance, and reading. The remainder of the morning consists of scholars working through the nationally-recognized Children’s Defense Fund Integrated Reading Curriculum in smaller groups of 10 with a trained college scholar. The afternoon begins with a nutritious lunch, followed by afternoon activities which include learning about different cultures, arts and crafts, outdoor games, and weekly field trips. The scholars are dismissed at 3:00 PM.
The program will be held at CAAS Head Start’s Jack Hamilton Center, 29 Allen Street, Somerville from July 2, 2012 through August 10, 2012. While College Avenue United Methodist Church (Connexion) is running the program, it is completely secular in content. No scholar or family will be discriminated against on the basis of faith tradition, race, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ability.
