Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) is holding the first of two public hearings on the City’s One-Year Action Plan for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) program, and the HOME program.

The HUD block grants are a very important source of funding for affordable housing in Somerville.

    By federal law, at least 70% of this HUD Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding needs to be principally benefit residents with low and moderate income.

    That’s why it’s really important for low and moderate income residents to write in comments and suggestions on how this funding can be used to eliminate gaps in services and to increase equitable and usable opportunities that will positively benefit the lowest income neighborhoods and residents.

    Programs designed and chosen to receive Somerville’s CDBG funding must support one or more of these objectives:
    1. expand economic opportunities
    2. eliminate blight and revitalize neighborhoods; and
    3. increase affordable, accessible and integrated housing opportunities.

    HUD requires the city to affirmatively reach out to non-English speaking residents and residents with disAbilities, in order to directly hear about the most pressing on-the-ground needs of these cultures from people genuinely living the life.
