Do you ever play the “If-I-had-a-million-dollars” game? Whenever I play, I think of throwing intimate parties for brilliant, powerful people who will orchestrate the betterment of society before my eyes. Now that TEDx is coming to the Armory, I don’t have to hit the lottery to get a full day’s taste of the experience.
TEDxSomerville is modeled after TED conferences famously held in California for four days and devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Attendees to TEDxSomerville will listen to short talks of various lengths in three sessions with group discussions in between. The event will take place at the Armory on March 4, 10AM to 6:30PM. It is necessary to apply to attend, so be sure to read up on the event at TedXSomerville.org .
The theme for our very own TEDx is “Creative Economy, Sustainable Community,” two cool things to strive for. Some of the people I’m looking forward to hearing from are Seth Itzkan, Somerville businessman and friend whom I happen to know just took a fascinating trip to Zimbabwe to study the innovative methods of reversing desertification from the Savory Institute, Wig Zamore whose work is so perfectly relevant to Somerville transit development issues (and went to my high school), and Alex Feldman because he’s always funny and topical.
Participants will be encouraged to switch groups each time there is group discussion so it’ll be a giant vat of cross-fertilization from all corners of Somerville (or at least that’s the idea). Party in Davis Square after! I hope to see you there!

I like the ‘party ‘ analogy.
this is a most excellent bunch to be around. We’re all busy distilling our life’s work down to just a few minutes. There should be some pretty good mingling between sessions, too.

Ok, I applied. I have been hearing about it, but you got me with the party….

Linda asked me make some comments about what I wanted to achieve with my presentation at TEDxSomerville. They only give me six minutes, but you can catch a summary of the hour-long version from a talk I recently gave at Tufts. It’s called Reversing Global Warming and Desertification with Livestock?, and is about an innovative new approach that offers promise for our future.
