I hope you enjoy (and share!) this Xtranormal animation from Citizens for Public Schools about the Stand For Children’s ballot initiative:

Stand’s proposal is now before the legislature. If the legislature doesn’t pass it, Stand will hire a signature-gathering company to get more signatures and put it on the 2012 ballot.

Citizens for Public Schools is organizing a community-by-community effort to defeat this ballot question. Please send me a note: ajehlen@gmail, if you’d like to help (or if you’d like to talk about it).

We’ll probably meet next week.

Alain Jehlen

The constitutionality of placing the question on the ballot has been challenged by the teachers union.

Yes, that’s right. The union’s main argument is that the ballot question has several, independent parts, and ballot questions are supposed to be yes/no questions. A voter shouldn’t be faced with liking some parts and not others. I have no idea whether they are likely to succeed, but I hear there may not be a decision for quite a while.

We don’t want to wait until summer before starting to talk about it. Stand will have plenty of $$$ for a last minute media blitz.

  3. Knut Dorker says:

It’s going to be an interesting fight. Stand for Children has had some successes in IL and WA. I think that the outcome of the referendum in MA will depend on whether the public believes that the teacher’s union is a positive force in schools or whether they are just a self-serving organization. I wonder if there any early polls about this question.
