Friends,

I wanted you to be aware of what I consider to be a very important committee
meeting next week, one that may play a role in the future of one or more of
our schools. (see message posted below)

Please know that Dr. Dakin was invited at my request (I have attended a few
of his workshops over the past couple of years and found him to be very
detail oriented and organized). Dr. Dakin is the current Supt. of the
Revere Public School System and the current Mass Association of School
Supts. President.

I ask for your assistance in forwarding this message to your friends and
neighbors.

As always, should you have any question or comment, I am an e-mail away.

Hope to see you at our meeting,
Mary Jo

The Somerville School Committee will meet on Wednesday, January 18th to

discuss Innovation Schools. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. at the
Administrative Offices at 42 Cross Street.

Everyone is welcome to join us.

The School Committee voted to explore introducing Innovation Schools in
Somerville. To learn more, we invited two experts who have direct experience
with Innovation Schools.

Dan French is the executive director of the Center for Collaborative
Education. He is the former Director of Instruction and Curriculum for the
Massachusetts Department of Education, and special educator. Ed. D. from
UMass./Amherst. He is also the author of 1998 Phi Delta Kappan article, “The
State’s Role in Shaping a Progressive Vision of Public Education.” Dan is
currently serving as our primary consultant at the Healey School as it moves
to fulfill its new mission of progressive education.

Paul Dakin is the Superintendent of the Revere Public Schools and has
started a very successful Innovation School in this urban district.

Please join us as we look into these initiatives and discuss other School
Committee goals.

I have attached a chart (PDF) that compares Innovation Schools to other schools
such as PILOT schools and Horace Mann Charter schools.

One Response to “Innovation Schools”

  1. Jeff Levine says:

Thanks for posting this information. It seems like it is worth exploring. I wonder why the Innovation School model is being explored rather than the Horace Mann Charter School model? The HMCS model seems to have as much or more promise to promote innovation within the SPS distinct.
