Somerville High School Issues

As I troll the school, I notice a few things I find interesting. One of the girls bathrooms on the 1st floor by the atrium and the bathroom by the vocational shops on the basement level have paper towels, but the girls bathroom near the cafeteria have hand dryers that are very slow and take about 3-4 minutes to dry your hands. I see girls who just take toilet paper to dry their hands because they are fed up on how long it takes to use the hand dryers and clog the sinks with toilet paper. Either way there is going to be an issue whether it’s killing trees or abusing electricity and it effects our economy.

Another issue is the cafeteria food. I understand they are trying to get us to eat healthy, but how is processed food healthy for us? I enjoy the salad bar being put into the school, but because people are so impatient they decide to put their hands in it to get the things they want, spreading germs to others. Although the salad may be healthy, the calories increase when used with dressing. Though they may have salad for students, it still doesn’t help those who are vegan and vegetarian. They basically can’t have anything this school offers. Sure, vegetarians can have salad, but those who care about it deeply choose not to because of some products being mixed or encountered with others at the salad bar.

The auditorium is another issue. It’s great we received a new stage, but it has only been about a few months and it’s already being destroyed, due to the incapable, ignorant, and immature students at the Someville High School. As part of the wood broke off, I noticed the piece still had a bar code stick on it. I also it was just cheap plywood, put over the old stage. The top of the stage is perfectly fine besides people rudely sticking gum to it. The front of the stage is broken and two side squares are made of cheap, face, bendable, metal and is held together by ducktape. It has already been kicked in and completely destroyed because of the students who are to lazy to walk up the stairs and jump on stage. The chairs are still broken and the fly and electrical system still needs some work. Some of people who use the auditorium and is in Musical, Drama Club, Drama Workshop, Chorus, etc. are careless when it comes to following simple rules to maintain a good auditorium.

Another issue that of course no one likes is the homework we receive from teachers. We have five blocks a day where teachers assign homework and most students have things after school such as a job, club, chores and more that we barely have any time to ourselves. We try to do as much homework as we can, losing lack of sleep, which brings us behind on school and causing tardiness for students. If they didn’t give us so much homework, we would be able to finish at a decent time, get a good nights rest, and possibly help the tardiness issue.

My last small issue is the fact of Mr. Ciccariello leaving. Will our new head master care about the things such as the auditorium, art departments, and heating, cooling systems, etc.? Mr. Ciccariello was kind enough to get a new mop for me (Fran Zimmerman) and Jen Silva to use to clean the auditorium after use. What will happen to that? Will it just be used like any other mop or will it still stay in it’s original place for mine and Jen’s use? These are the kind of things that worry me because I’m a very artistic person who loves to be on stage. I didn’t get the chance to go to the meeting about what we wanted in our new house master, but I hope some people mentions things I wanted in a new house master as well.

Over all I just want the Somerville High School to represent what it really stands for. There are so many middle schools in Somerville that get what ever they want. There is only one High School and if the things that need to be fixed are not fixed this school will crumble down and every one would have to move to Medford or some other high school. Somerville High should be treated with respect. The walls, roof, mold, stage, everything should be fixed. Clubs at SHS have so many fundraisers why can’t there be one to fix parts of the school. I feel as if money is being wasted on the unimportant things here. I just want to see compromise and solutions.

I like how you think. I’ll bet other cities have fundraisers for school improvements like the ones you’re talking about. Hmmmm.

It seems like a long standing tradition in Somerville to let maintenance slide in hopes that things will fall down and the state will come in and offer to pay for most of something new. Maybe this makes a kind of odd fiscal sense – nobody funds repairs except the taxpayers – but it short changes the students, and, in the case of the library, the library patrons and there is a built in disincentive for politicians. Hmmm, not unlike the MBTA, sewers, bridges, etc. So maybe it’s more than just a Somerville frame of mind?

Did you know that the school had recently bought tons of iPads?! Out of everything they could have bought or fixed they bought iPads… The world doesn’t need more electronics that kids will try to steal and damage the minds of children. We already have computes for that.

Somerville High School got new iPads. Technology is ruining the minds of people. The school already had computers so why do we need the iPads. As for cells phones, I meant we already have our cell phones and the school computers ruining our minds. The iPads are totally uncalled for. We don’t need them compared to 90% of the stuff the school does need.
