According to articles in the Boston Globe, Somerville Journal, Somerville Patch, and Boston Herald this week, WalMart wants to open “a grocery store” at the site of the defunct Circuit City next to Home Depot in Assembly Square. WalMart will require a series of Planning Board variances to carry out this proposal.
This proposal is in direct conflict with the long-term vision of the site, as a high-density, mixed-use economic engine for Somerville. This could be the thin edge of the wedge that will finish off Assembly Square. What do you think?

I frickin hate walmart with an undying passion and one of the best features of the boston metro area is that walmart is like an hour away. If walmart comes to Somerville, hell, I might as well just move back to Pennsylvania. I sincerely hope the community tells walmart corp they can go pound sand and find another town to ruin.

Somerville should conduct very thorough research as to the negative impact on local businesses before giving WalMart the green light on this endeavor.
There is the temptation of local job availability, however, if WalMart is anything like other big box chains, the higher hourly rate positions will be filled by current employees transferring from one location to this one.

Walmart should definitely go pound sand! I’m ready to boycott and be noisy about it. Walmart is a terrible, sexist employer which underpays their workers so that they need to rely on public benefits to make ends meet. There are a million purveyors in the world. Let’s find one we can be proud to have in our community!

On behalf of Somerville Climate Action we are drafting a letter to the Mayor about our opposition to Walmart in Somerville. We need more sustainable, healthy , local food access- not corporate food!! Have yet to hear from anyone who is in favor of this so hopefully it will not happen.
