One Response to “7/20/11 Public Meeting on Improvements to Assembly Square Riverfront Park”

    To whom it may concern:

This is with regard to the meeting on July 20 seeking public input about coming improvements to the Assembly Square River Park. I would like to reiterate for the record some important points:

    1. I prefer to turn the path and the activities toward the river and that the park be naturalized. In particular, please do not interrupt the parkland with large paved areas. There are enough paved areas in Assembly Square as it is.
    2. There should be a clear visual and physical connection between the river and the rest of the site. Means for doing this could include one or more public art areas. However, such areas should be comparatively small, in the form of gateways. See, for instance, the Minuteman Path terminus near the Alewife T-Stop.
    3. Currently there is no easy access from the new Block 10 restaurant to the parkland, suggesting a gateway near that restaurant. This, however, is an instance of a more general issue, which is that gateways from the shopping-center end of the site (near Rt. 28) should be aligned as much as possible with the long-term vision for the site, in which the shopping center is replaced with higher-value developments accessed by cross streets. DCR should work with Federal Realty to design this alignment. Federal Realty has a model of the site in their showroom for reference.
    4. The final design should include clear access from the Assembly Square Orange Line T-Stop.

Thank you for providing this opportunity for comment.
