Were you aware of any details regarding yesterday’s tornado watch for Somerville? I didn’t know much until I read the story by SomervillePatch‘s Roberto Scalese- today.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in partnership with FEMA, wireless carriers, and the City of New York, has launched a new technology and service to send critical emergency alerts to NYCity residents’ mobile phones when public safety is threatened. This new technology and service is called the Personal Localized Alerting Network, a.k.a., PLAN.
FCC Chairperson Julius Genachowski noted, (May 10, 2011) that, “Nearly a decade after 9/11 we still don’t have a nationwide, funded interoperable public safety network which will allow emergency personnel from different jurisdictions to communicate with each other. That’s inexcusable.”
And he promised: “By next April, it will be deployed in cities across the country…”
As FCC shapes a regulatory framework enabling this multi-platform alert system, Congress crafts legislation to fund the network.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection provides an Emergency Preparedness Municipal Compliance fact Sheet that links to community emergency planning templates by Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).
Somerville’s Emergency preparedness information is found on the Health department pages at http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/health/emgergency [SIC]
At this time, how well prepared do you feel you are to cope with a public emergency?
At this time, do you think it would benefit Somerville to work with local carriers to ready our City to implement a PLAN?
