THE KENNEDY POOL IS CELEBRATING OUR 10TH BIRTHDAY BY GIVING AWAY SWIMMING LESSONS!
To celebrate the 10th birthday of the Kennedy Pool we are raffling off 2 free swim lessons certificates (valued at $50 each) every month between October 2010 and May 2011
How do you enter the raffle?
1. Visit the Kennedy Pool during lessons or family / lap swim hours and fill out a ticket (need a schedule? Visit www.somerville.k12.ma.us/pool or swing by the Kennedy School to pick one up). That’s it!
Kennedy Pool staff will draw two winning tickets on the 3rd Monday of the month during evening family swim.
Some disclaimers:
• Only Somerville residents are eligible to register.
• Winners must follow the standard lesson registration sign-up procedures after receiving their prize.
• Individuals can only enter one time each month.
• One prize per person.
Individuals who are not lucky enough to win free swimming lessons are still invited to visit the Kennedy Pool for swimming lessons or lap and family recreational swim. The usage fee for Somerville residents, which has remained unchanged over the facility’s ten year history, is $3 per adult and $1 per child for family swim, and $4 for evening adult lap swim and $5 for morning lap swim. Swimming lessons are $50. For more information about the services and resources available at the Kennedy Pool please visit www.somerville.k12.ma.us/pool.

Imagine that as part of the celebration of the 10th Birthday of the Kennedy Pool, there had been an announcement that a few lanes of the large pool would be designated open for free swim (during ‘family swim’ times or lap swim times) for use by older swimmers, swimmers with physical disabilities, and single adults, whose fitness and recreation needs are not met within the current usage designations. Alternatively, use of the small pool- which is fully accessible- could be allocated for use by residents and guests who are elderly and/or have disablilities (whether permanent or temporary). Access to pool facilities by local Special Olympians should not be touted as evidence that the pool serves all Somervillians; it does not.
Interestingly, the pricing information cited in the posting of October 7th, presumably provided by the pool staff, does not mention that there is a reduced price for ‘seniors.’ Perhaps inclusion of that information might encourage people with white hair and wrinkles to flock to the well-kept secret that is the Kennedy Pool. Integration is fine- within limits.

I shared this post with the administrative team at the Kennedy Pool. Here is their response! (Ask and ye shall receive!)
“the small pool- which is fully accessible- could be allocated for use by residents and guests who are elderly and/or have disabilities”
We encourage the small pool to be used after family swimming 7:30-8:45pm (or during family swimming 6-7:30pm)for anyone learning to swim, doing physical therapy, or the elderly (basically anyone 18+). We have many individuals that come and do their own physical therapy during the evenings. In the summer, when we are able to open up during the early afternoon, we have quite a few seniors who come in to spend time in the water. Also, in the summer when there is simply more time available for the public we have adult lessons that everyone is welcome to register for and have had seniors take the class in the past.
“reduced price for ‘seniors”
As noted on our website, flyers, postings at the pool, and verbally by our staff, we do have a reduced fee for Senior Citizens 60 years and older.
Messaging about services for local seniors was not the theme of the announcement of our 10 year anniversary. As much as we would like to include all of our information on every sheet we put out to the public there is simply not enough space on 1 sheet to do this. We will work to consider how to develop specific messaging for our current and potential senior patrons and their families.
