[ September 15, 2009; 5:00 pm; ] In the past, the state has argued that the environmental burden of the Big Dig on Somerville is mitigated by projects elsewhere, such as the South Shore Greenbush Line, and that the Green Line Extension is unnecessary. Because health effects are local, this argument is specious and has been rejected by the courts. Those who care about the Green Line Extension should continue to argue for local mitigation for local effects.
