30-Day Comment Period on MPO Transportation Improvement Plan
Starts Mon. Aug. 24
Ends Wed. Sep. 23
The draft Transportation Improvement Plan 2010-2013 (TIP) and Regional Transportation Plan 2010-2030 (RFP) are available from the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) as of Monday, August 24, 2009, for a 30-day comment period.
Everyone who wants the Green Line extended into Somerville and a T-Stop built at Assembly Square should send testimony to the MPO supporting those proposals. The Green Line Extension is not currently in the draft MPO plans, and if it is not put there, it will not receive federal funding and will not be built.
I will post links to these documents under MPO Transportation Improvement Plan Process as soon as I can. For further background and issues, see Transportation Projects.

MPO’s antidiscrimination statement and related information.

I’ve updated http://www.whyisthisimportant.net/comingevents/comingevents.html (and specifically http://www.whyisthisimportant.net/comingevents/090824_090830_comingevents.html ) with links to the TIP 2010-2013 main page and documents. According to the documents, both the Assembly Square Orange Line T-Stop and the Green Line Extension are scheduled in 2020. We should do something about this.
To that end, I’d also like to let you know that at 4 PM Wed. September 9, the Executive Office of Transportation is holding a status update on the transit improvements required by the State (Air Quality) Improvement Plan, which include the Green Line Extension. The comment period on these commitments ends 5 PM Tuesday, September 15. For more on this, see Coming Events for that week.
In the past, the state argued that they don’t need to do the Green Line Extension because other improvements such as the Greenbush Line did what was necessary to meet the air quality improvement targets for the region. A lawsuit convinced them otherwise. We need to keep telling them the same. Forty years of breathing other people’s exhaust is enough.

A fine point here about reading the state TIP documents.
It’s been pointed out to me that the air quality model they’re using divides times in 10 year increments. If the Green Line Extension was actually finished in 2014, it’d be counted toward model year 2020. So the 2020 date doesn’t necessarily mean the state is delaying development.
On the other hand, if they finished the Green Line Extension in December 2020, that would also be counted toward 2020.

I have updated WhyIsThisImportant.net with the current status of the Green Line Extension and the Red/Blue Line Connector Design as described in the Status of Legal Commitments under the SIP document (see http://www.whyisthisimportant.net/comingevents/transportationprojects.html).
