This new partnership will enable SV to collect and use tax-deductible donations from you so we can focus on producing high quality local stories that matter to you while SCAT (Somerville Community Access TV) gets to handle our filings to the IRS and also take a small cut for their help.

Q: Why is this important to me (you) ?

A: Because

  1. You care about our community and wish to see more coverage, analysis, and investigation of local issues.
  2. You believe that journalism is fundamental to a healthy democracy.
  3. You are a generous and wonderful person and want to support this blog financially so it can last and flourish.
  4. All of the above.

Q: How is this good for Somerville Voices?

A:

  1. Fiscal sponsorship means we can spend donations without worrying about the tax implications that would distract us from our core activities. We will also remain independent.
  2. The non-profit umbrella will allow SV to collect tax-deductible donations which may entice more people to donate and/or donate in larger amounts.
  3. Our partnership with SCAT strengthens our connection to the community.

Q: How is this good for SCAT?

A:

  1. SCAT will earn a small but significant percentage (7%) of all donations they handle. This revenue will help sustain its operations.
  2. SCAT will be supporting the SV blog and both organizations have the common goal of helping to empower residents to express themselves through local media.

Q: When will online donations be available on Somerville Voices?

A: Hopefully very soon, probably over the next two weeks as we integrate with the online platform: ThePoint.com.

Q: Will general donations be the only revenue source for SV?

A: No, we also plan to ask for story-specific pledges soon, where you can contribute to a particular news story / investigative report.  Other traditional sources such as grants, local advertising, and print sales/subscriptions are also possible for the future.

Q: What kinds of stories will be funded with donations?

A: Local news and investigative reports. You tell us what you’d like to see!

Thanks to SCAT’s board of directors, SCAT Exec. Director Wendy Blom, and the entire Somerville Voices team for helping this agreement succeed!
