Rockband Tournament in Anime Boston

On May 22 – 24 2009, I went to Anime Boston for the first time. Anime Boston is a convention where all Japanese animation lovers come together and buy or interact with one another. There are a lot of things going on in anime Boston. There is a concert and competitions of various different games. I happened to join a Rock band Tournament.

On May23, I wanted to go to this convention to see a concert. I was siked to go see it but then my friend asked me if I wanted to join his band for the rock band tournament because he needed one more person. I was going to the concert, but he told me that he really needed me, so I said sure. I was sad afterwards because I wanted to go to the concert. I got over it eventually.

My friends and I were about to sign up for the tournament, when the judges told us that they were going to judge us on performance only, rather than on who has the highest score. In this video game, when you play well by hitting the right notes, you get points. At the end of the song, you get a score. Whether or not it’s a high score, it doesn’t matter in this tournament. The judges could care less about the score. They wanted us to go up on stage and perform like a real live band. I thought to myself, “ I can’t go up in front of a bunch of people and move around. I get nervous and I have stage fright. “ My friend told me to suck it up because he needs me to go up and perform good. I thought, “ Eventually I will have to get over this fear. Why not start now?” So I told him to sign us up.

My team was last to perform so we knew what our competition was like. While I was playing drums, I kept messing up. I thought that I was going to be the downfall of our band. But our lead singer, after he finished singing, went off stage and into the crowd and went into a fettle position. I thought that was very funny. The crowd was laughing a lot because he did that.

When the judges were going to call the top 3 bands that performed well, they called our band’s name, The Rampaging Unicorns. I thought we were in the top 3, but then they said that we were being mentioned for “honorable emos.” I’m not sure what that quite meant, but that just made me feel sad. We didn’t end up being in the top 3. The judges said they were sorry for getting our hopes up.

After this whole ordeal was over, my friends and I ended up going home because we were bummed that we didn’t win. We really wanted to win. Hopefully we get better so we can win in the next year’s tournament. I want to strive for victory.
