From the SPS homepage, entitled “A message from Tony Pierantozzi, Superintendent of Schools”
… The extent of the impact of the current financial crisis on fiscal year 2010 remains unclear. We do know that the impact of the revenue decrease at the State level will require creative solutions and difficulty in maintaining our services. We are committed to protecting the core programs and maintaining sound class size. Members of my team receive updated information daily from the state and federal government local aid to public schools and the availability of economic stimulus money. Funds will be applied to address our priority needs. …

Why does the school district’s website have the date of the meeting as June 16?

Thanks for pointing that out, Janine! I wasn’t aware the time had changed. Confusingly, the June 16th meeting is listed with two times : 5pm and 9pm. I’ve updated the time of the event here as 5pm and have queried Pat Durette at the SPS for confirmation.

To clarify further, the June 17 meeting will be a meeting of the Educational Programs and Instruction Subcommittee (the website has been updated). At this meeting we will focus on the District’s Middle Grades initiatives for the coming school year.
There have been many changes to the schedule as we have worked our way through the current budget cycle. The Ed. Programs meetings was originally scheduled for June 11 but was pushed back to the 17th so the School Committee could discuss the budget.
I hope people can join us for what promises to be an interesting and important discussion about our Middle Grades program. Once the agenda is finalized I will be sure to distribute notice to any and all lists in Somerville.
Best,
Adam

Thanks Adam – I was on the road when I posted earlier to explain the Tuesday night schedule, I had planned on making comment about our meeting on Wednesday. I also hope people can join us for the important discussion on the Middle Grade Initiative. By increasing public awareness of these subcommittee meetings and the work we are doing regardless of the budgetary issues we face, hopefully the message will continue to filter through that we have a terrific and very diverse school system.
Cheer –
