How would I change the school? Like many things in life there are two sides to every question, and this is no different. I feel as though the Somerville High School has many flaws that could be patched up in the future. I also think the school has also got some things down right. A number of things I dislike about this school are lunch/lunch prices, classrooms, technology, activities, and a variety of other things. Lunch/lunch prices at our school are number one on my list for what’s wrong with this school. The school wants people who don’t get free lunch to pay $2.75 for the lunch they serve here. Now I wouldn’t have a problem it if the food was good, think about this for a mere $0.25 more you could go to McDonald’s or Burger King and get a whole meal. Some people might say that fast food is unhealthy but is the high school food actually any healthier then this food. My solution to the lunch problem, is to let people go out for lunch. My second problem with school is that it looks like a jail. If you go to newer schools you will see nice new painted walls but not in our school. In our school they painted a nice baige and dark red that resembles a jail.  I personally think they should build a new school; during my time high school  I have seen bricks fall from the building, plaster fall from the ceiling. Technology is probably the only thing that holds kids back from learning in the high school. All the computers in this school are super slow, the printers are constantly broken, and a lot of useful websites are blocked. I think that websites like youtube should be unblocked because most kids learn better through things that are visual, that they are used to using. The final thing I would like the school to do is create a time after school were there is an open gym.

On the other hand though the school has got some things right, for example I think the school has a good schedule system as well as a nice variety of teachers. The block schedule the high school has is nice because it enables you to have a series of different classes each day. The thing the high school has done best, has been hiring teachers of different personalities and backgrounds. The teachers at the high school change year to year and each one has a totally different personality. I think the high school ha a lot to learn but it has also done some things right.

thekid, you seem able to look at all sides with a balanced and discerning attitude, and you also bring so much creativity to the table! Here, you have lots of good ideas to not only improve the way the physical structure is taken care of, but also how our environment changes the way we feel. Hey, what colors would you have chosen for painting those halls last summer?!

As for technology, that’s also super important, because technology can really level the playing field for everyone- if it’s available, and if it works! But since all those things take money, is there a way you could think of, so that money can be raised to bring more up to date technology to the school?

It’s totally fabulous to hear how the diversity of the teachers definitely improves the culture of the school. I bet alot of people are going to appreciate the fact that you included that analysis. It seems like you have alot of skill in thinking about how to make a more beneficial culture for everyone.

I agree with Eila. By seeing things from both sides of the fence, you have given a very strong argument. You mentioned a lot of issues with technology. In your opinion, what is the first priority in improving the technology at SHS? If you could only pick one thing to improve, what would it be?

  3. I would agree with you about letting the kids go out for lunch. I would love for that to happen also with my school. If that’s not a possibility then I would want to change the food being served. Maybe that would work.
