Being as student at Somerville High School and seeing how things are run and the curriculum that is followed makes me think about how I would change if I had the chance. Although I love Somerville High, there are without a doubt many things that i would change. One of my pet peeves about school is being given busy work. I don’t think that work should be given to students if it dose not teach you anything and is just used to fill time. Work should be used to support things that we are learning in school and to help us learn new things and make us think. There is no value in just doing worksheets or book work here and there to fill time because none of the information that we get from that really sticks. I also believe that school is used to prepare us for the future and that the curriculum should be based towards kids futures. I don’t think people should have to take classes for things that they are not going to need in the future just to fill in credits. Although we do have many classes that will help us in the future, i think it is very important to add to these classes and make some of the requirements. For example, we have a personal finance class which will be very helpful to us in the future since we will all be dealing with our finances sooner or later. These are the classes that should be requirements rather than adding another gym class to kids schedules. Overall there are not too many changes i would make to Somerville High. I think that we have a strong curriculum already and we are so lucky that we have a broad range of classes that are offered at the high school.

AB1334, you said it! A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and so is our time…
and energies.
It’s also good to hear that you are feel that some of the classes will yield future benefits. thanks alot for the clues about how worksheets and bookwork are just time-fillers that don’t make meaningful learning.
