Students who will be 5 by August 31, 2009 are eligible for free, full-day kindergarten in the Somerville Public Schools. Kindergarten registration begins in January! Registration materials will be mailed home to the parents/guardians of every age eligible child born in Somerville. Materials can also be mailed by calling the Parent Information Center (PIC) at 617-625-6600 x6960. Registration materials must be completed and returned to the PIC by April 9, 2009 to be included in the first batch of kindergarten school and classroom assignments. If necessary, a lottery will be held on April 15th for Kindergarten slots in the city-wide Choice program housed at the Healey School and the city-wide bilingual Unidos program temporarily housed at the Capuano Center.
The PIC, located at 42 Prescott Street a short walk from Somerville City Hall, can help you complete your registration materials at their office during regular business hours (M-Th from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM and Fridays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM), or at one of several community kindergarten registration “clinics” hosted through early February. The schedule is:
1/24/09 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the East Somerville Community School at Cummings gym (42 Prescott Street)
1/26/09 from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Capuano Center (150 Glen Street)
1/27/09 from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Capuano Center (150 Glen Street)
1/28/09 from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the West Somerville Neighborhood School (177 Powderhouse Boulevard)
1/29/09 from 2:00 – 7:00 PM at the Healey School (5 Meacham Street)
2/3/09 from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM at the PIC (42 Prescott Street).
Somerville participates in a controlled choice student assignment plan, which means families must choose their top three school choices for their child; students are not automatically enrolled in the school nearest their homes.
How do you choose which school is right for your child? Elementary schools across the city are hosting open houses from January 21, 2009-January 23, 2009. Attend an open house to get a building tour, to learn more about the instructional programs and unique characteristics of each school, and to meet the instructional leadership of the building. Open House hours are:
January 21 – 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
January 22 – 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM
January 23 – 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM.
Cannot make it to an open house? Video tours of each school are available on the District’s website, and a comprehensive print guide to the schools will be included in the registration packet or can be obtained by calling 311.

Are children born in a Boston hospital to Somerville parents eligible for all-day kindergarten?

The kids are Somerville residents if they’re living here, regardless of where they were born.

That’s right! We mail kindergarten reg packets to the families of children who were born here. If your age-eligible child (5 by August 31, 2009) who now lives full-time in Somerville with you was born anywhere else – in Boston, Cambridge, Sao Paolo, Islamabad, Darfur, Seattle, Bejing, Katmandu, Mumbai, Ithaca – anywhere but Somerville – you need to call the Parent Information Center (called the PIC) to get a packet, 617-625-6600 x6960. Packets are expected to be ready to go out by the beginning of next week. We’re waiting for the 16-page Guide to the Somerville Public Schools to be printed before these go out the door.
