Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Somerville Youth Arts Coordinator Jimmy DelPonte announced today that auditions will be held Tuesday, December 10th for a new after-school arts enrichment program called “Klass Klownz.” DelPonte, who began working for the City in August, has a degree in Musical Theater from Emerson. He will be recruiting up to 25 Somerville residents in grades seven, eight and nine to explore sketch comedy, music parodies and improvisational theater in a 20-week workshop that will meet Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in the West Somerville Neighborhood School.
“Klass Klownz” auditions are open to any Somerville resident in Grades 7 through 9, and will be held Wednesday, December 10th at 6:00 p.m. in West Somerville Neighborhood School at 177 Powderhouse Boulevard. Performers should prepare a one-minute skit that can take the form of a funny song, an impression, or a parody of a TV ad or character. A CD player will be provided for those auditioners that have their own music.
A Somerville native and resident with an extensive background in radio and music, DelPonte has already developed and premiered a new monthly variety show for City Cable in which he combines studio and location interviews with local and topical humor. The show airs on Comcast Channel 16 and RCN Channel 13. Sample clips of “Seriously, Somerville” can be found on the City Cable Television Shows page of the City’s Communications Department webpage. The show airs several times weekly on City Cable, including Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.
