Youth Voices: Why I love music video games

I like to play video games that have to do with music or creating music. Like DDR (Dance Dance Revolution): you play with a mat that has 4 arrows, one pointing up, down, left and right. On the screen, you press the arrows with your feet by dancing along with the music that you’re hearing on the game. That is one music game that I love to play.

Another is called Guitar Hero. In this game, you play with a guitar. There are 5 buttons on the guitar that you have to press and you strum your guitar at the same time in order to play the music well. It is very interesting to play and very hard.

Another game I like to play is called Rock Band. In this game you play music by using drums, guitars, and mics for singing. I really love to play the drums in this game.

There are a lot more music games out there but there is one that I would love to tell you about. It is called Sing Stars. You use mics to sing any of the songs that are in the game. If you play non-stop, your voice will start to hurt. You will have a sore throat afterwards. But it is a really fun game to play with another person.

There was a day when I went to my friend’s house and we all played Sing Stars. There were about 10 or 12 people at my friend’s house. Since it’s only a 2-person game, we had to take turns. I sang a song called “I write sins, not tragedies” and ” Move along.” At first I thought it was going to be easy to play, but it wasn’t. I thought I just had to sing, but I had to match the notes in the song with my singing. It was very hard. If you sing the right notes, you get points. If you miss a note, you either lose points or don’t get any at all. So basically it is like karaoke, but with a couple of twists.

I did not win. I ended up losing. But even though I lost, I still loved it.

I just played Guitar Hero for the first time recently and it was so much fun! I’ve also played the American Idol game which sounds a bit like Sing Stars. I haven’t tried Sing Stars yet, but I’ll have to check that out – thanks for the tip!

I like playing the drums in Rock Band too. I’m horrible at the singing though. Did you know Harmonix, the company that makes these games, is based right next door in Cambridge? They were just rated the 11th best place to work in Massachusetts by the Boston Globe.

  3. I love DDR because of the fun music and exercise you get while dancing. There are some amazing videos of DDR competitions out there. Thanks for sharing your passion for music games!
