On September 16th, our campaign made history, winning an incredibly challenging write-in campaign. To the many campaign volunteers and supporters, and to the hard-working wardens, police officers, and other elections officials and staff, I would like to say thank you. I also want to thank my challenger, Alderman Bob Trane, for running a spirited campaign. But most of all, I want to thank all of you who cast your vote on September 16th.
For the past four years, I have had the honor of representing both Medford and Somerville. I have done my best to work hard, to fight with passion and commitment, and most importantly, to deliver for the working families of our community.
We have had many successes, including securing funding for important programs for our youth, our seniors, and our parks and open space, raising the minimum wage, closing corporate tax loopholes, preserving marriage equality, and keeping the green line extension on schedule.
I made a conscious effort to keep my campaign focused on issues important to our community. Despite the challenge of running on stickers, you voted resoundingly in favor of continued progress and leadership on the values we share.
I will continue to keep an open door and be responsive to your concerns. Whether you are a constituent seeking support for your family, or a resident advocating for a policy or issue important to you, I welcome your feedback and questions. Please contact me any time, and I will do my best to hear you out, to advocate for your concerns, and to find common ground where we might otherwise disagree.
I commit to continuing to work hard and to deliver for our community, and I thank the voters of the 34th Middlesex District for your continued trust and support.
Sincerely,
Carl Sciortino
State Representative

Big congratulations from the 26th Middlesex. Winning a sticker campaign against a name printed on a ballot is a tremendous accomplishment – I think the level of grass-roots support you received speaks volumes about how your constituents view your work on their behalf. Well done.

Carl, are you still going to work only for special interest groups or are you going to actually start to talk to resident/business owners of the 34th? Do you even know anyone who lives in the 34th?

Congratulations, Carl! I’m so proud of your positive, people-powered campaign! Whereas Bob Trane seemed to have focused on saturating the environment with his signs, you concentrated on voter contact and the voters rewarded you for that.
Imux, which special interest groups are you referring to?
Of course Carl knows people who live in the 34th district because he lives here and has represented the district for the last four years. I also live in the district and I’ve met him personally many times and I’ve volunteered many hours helping to ensure his re-election.

Barry, I was referring to the 34th district in Massachusetts. I have no idea which 34th that Carl actually knows people in, but it isn’t ours.
Special interest groups? Nothing against the GLBT community, but Carl seem to bend over backwards for them. Instead of just catering to one small group shouldn’t Carl be more concerned with bringing financial assistance to ALL the residents and businesses here?
I understand that Bob may run a sticker campaign for the general election, so this may not be over yet. Too early for Carl to be breaking out the Champagne — if you ask me.

Imux, how do you know who Carl knows? You don’t.
I’m glad Carl sticks up for the GLBT community because we need to end legalized discrimination in this country.
Actually, among his many accomplishments, Carl co-sponsored legislation raising the minimum wage, is committed to pay equity and equality in the workplace, and supports closing corporate tax loopholes. Those are financial issues that affect all residents and businesses.
If Bob couldn’t win with his name on the ballot, I doubt he’d stand much of a chance with a much more difficult and expensive sticker campaign.

Barry, stickers are not expensive. Now I know that Bob won’t be able to bus in all the out-of-towners that Carl did (via the progressive machine), but he did get within 300 votes of Carl in a DEMOCRATIC ONLY primary. Now add in the independents and the republicans and you can see that Bob has a very good shot at this.
Carl’s priorities are not the priorities of the majority of residents. I congratulate him on using the progressive machine to win the election, but I (and many others) will hold him accountable for his votes/actions or lack thereof.

Imux, does Bob Trane want you to speak for him? Bob is the Democratic Ward Chair in Ward 7 and it wouldn’t look good for him to run against the elected Democratic Nominee in November. I don’t think you should be spreading rumors about Bob that make him look bad to the party. So I really don’t think you are doing him any favors by saying that he is going to do this unless he has announced that he is doing it himself. Bob is a proud Democrat. He is not an Independent and he is not a Republican, so please don’t spread rumors that he is.
I live in Ward 7 in Somerville and I know both Carl and Bob.
Clearly 55% of people who voted in the primary in the 34th district know of what Carl brings to the office.

Also, in Massachusetts INDEPENDENTS can vote in the Democratic Primary and a lot of people who do vote in primaries are Unenrolled in either the Democratic or Republican party. So you can’t really say this was a Democratic Only election.

Katie, [offensive language censored]
Anyway, does anyone know if Carl still does “office hours” at Soleil? I want to go in there and [offensive language censored] for being such an elitist and do-nothing. He needs to hear it as he has gone back underground since the election.
Carl, we will be holding you accountable!
