Do you want to help set the direction for Somerville’s anti-poverty agency? The Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS) is seeking candidates—and voters—for its Board elections, coming up the week of May 19th at two locations in Somerville.
“We are looking for representatives from the community to join representatives of the City and the private sector on the CAAS Board,” said Executive Director Jack Hamilton. “You must be a Somerville resident, but no special expertise is required. What you do need is a sincere interest in the well-being of low-income households in Somerville and the will to learn about the issues affecting them, plus commitment and time.”
The CAAS Board meets on the fourth Tuesday evening of each month. CAAS actively seeks to increase the racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity of its Board. If you are interested in serving, please call Jack Hamilton at (617) 623-7370, x102.
Board elections will take place at two locations daily during the week of May 19-23: at the CAAS office, 66-70 Union Square, #104, and at CAAS Head Start classrooms at 29-33 Allen Street, 8:00-4:00. All low-income residents of Somerville are eligible to vote in these elections.
The mission of CAAS is to reduce poverty among local families and individuals while working to counteract, and whenever possible eliminate, the societal conditions that cause and perpetuate poverty. For help with tenants’ rights, racial discrimination and harassment, newcomer issues, welfare policy questions, affordable housing issues, and the needs of at-risk immigrant youth, call CAAS at (617) 623-7370. To enroll your young child in CAAS Head Start, please call (617) 623-7370 x150. For more information, please see the CAAS website at www.caasomerville.org.
